As a professional Business Jet Charter Broker, we receive many questions related to what the cost is of chartering a business jet. This is one of the most difficult questions to answer as the cost of chartering a business jet is affected by several different factors. It’s pretty much just the same as asking how long a piece of string is. In this article we will explain how the costing of a business jet charter is calculated and what you need to take into account. Generally the cost of a business jet charter is calculated based on the total number of flying hours required for the particular trip that the business jet has been requested for. Bear in mind that you need to include the flying hours required to position or reposition the business jet from or to its base.
Let’s look at a couple of scenarios to see how this works;
Dubai – Beirut - Dubai (return the same day) on a midsized business jet
let’s assume that we use a medium sized business jet that is based in Dubai; i.e. the aircraft is a Dubai Registered Business Jet. The Medium sized Business Jet will require 4 hours to fly from Dubai to Beirut and then again 4 hours to fly back from Beirut to Dubai; i.e. 8 hours in total to cover the trip. Knowing that the overall hourly rate on a midsized business jet ranges from USD 5,000 to USD 7,000 per hour and the total flying hours is 8 hours; this trip will cost approx USD 40,000 – USD 56,000.
Dubai – Singapore (one way) on a heavy jet
In this scenario we will assume that we use a heavy jet that is based in Dubai. The hourly price of a Heavy Jet based in the Middle East will range from USD 6,500 – USD 9,000 per flying hour. In this scenario the Business Jet will fly from Dubai to Singapore with the passengers, and after that return back to Dubai empty in order to come back home. It should be noted that the return flight is considered as a “ferry flight” and the cost of this is calculated into the price of the one way business jet charter. The flight from Dubai to Singapore is approx 8 hours, and again 8 hours to re-position the Business Jet back to its base. This means that this trip will cost 16 flying hours in total; and the total cost for a business jet charter for a one way DXB-SIN would be approx USD 104,000 – USD 144,000 (depending on what business jet you use).
As you can see, the trick is to understand that the business jet needs to fly back to its home base after the charter is completed. Many times this principal is ignored and customers often do not understand why chartering is so much more expensive than booking a first class seat on a scheduled flight.
